Review: Orion SkyQuest XT4.5 Classic Dobsonian Telescope

The Orion SkyQuest XT4.5 Dobsonian Telescope features a large 4.5″ light gathering mirror that can gather 260% more starlight than a typical beginner telescope. You will be able to view hundreds more objects, including the Moon’s myriad craters, Jupiter’s cloud bands, and the Milky Way’s nebula and star clusters.

This telescope has all the features that user’s love about Dobsonian’s, including smooth maneuverability vertically and horizontally, as well as sturdy optics support. The Teflon/Nylon bearing pads are featured at the base so the telescope moves smoothly with only a nudge. The enhanced stability always ensures that the views are steady.

The Orion SkyQuest XT4.5 can be carried around very easily as it’s the smallest scope in the Orion Dobsonian line. No set up or taking down is required with this scope. This makes it much easier to use, especially for children.

Included is a navigation knob that makes rotating it easy, and two fully coated Sirius Plossl telescope eyepieces: a 10mm for close ups at 91x and a 25mm for low-power views at 36x.

Customer Reviews

“excellent scope. assembly was a snap. great instructions. the views of the moon and stars is awsome with this telescope. you will be hard pressed to find a better scope for the price. two thumbs up.” – Eric Groene

“I just started the hobby of astronomy and I got SkyQuest XT4.5 as a gift. The first time I saw at Jupiter my mouth Droped! It preformes so well so well I managed to stay up until 2:00am to look at Saturn. I am looking foward to try my moon filter! I absolutely recommend this for beginners. The only problem I had with it was calibrating the finder scope, other than that no complaints.” – Mark

“I bought the SkyQuest XT4.5 mainly because it’s small and weighs only 18 pounds. It’s the prefect size for kids, but if you are 5 feet 5 inches or taller, and want to stand while observing, you would do well to place the scope on a sturdy table. To view the Moon comfortably, you will need to purchase a filter because this little light sponge sucks up so much light the Moon is as bright as a camera flash! Using the XT4.5, I’ve seen (in light-polluted San Leandro, California) several Messier objects, such as M42/Orion Nebula and numerous star clusters. The scope rendered with amazing clarity many other celestial objects, including 17P/Holmes, Jupiter (even saw a shadow cast on the surface of Jupiter from one of its moons!), Saturn, Mars, beautiful Albireo, just to name a few!” – Geraldine Freitas
